Scott abrogates electoral code of conduct

Republican Vice President Guy Scott has been accused of abrogating the Electoral Code of Conduct by distributing maize during the 48-hour long non-campaign period in tomorrow’s by-elections in Lukulu.

UPND Secretary General Winston Chibwe revealed yesterday that Dr Scott was going round Lukulu distributing bags of maize to the residents after the no campaign period was already in effect.

Mr Chibwe said his party was already in touch in the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) officials over the matter which he said  was in violation of the electoral code of conduct.

“The Vice President has been going around the district distributing maize to the people when it is clearly known that campaign stopped at 0600hrs today until the voting on Tuesday, but how can the whole of the vice President ignore such a regulation?” Mr Chibwe asked.

And Mr Chibwe has accused the ruling PF of sabotaging Tuesday’s Lukulu West Parliamentary bye-election by removing all he ECZ presiding officers and polling assistants to be replaced by known-cadres in the area.

“Some of the PF cadres are known party officials operating from Lukulu Market. Others are known partisan civil servants who are currently hosting party meetings at their homes and distributing party chitenge materials,” he said.

He also accused the PF of removing some voters from the original ECZ register to reduce the numbers on the elections’ day to its advantage.
