The Patriotic Front (PF) government is clandestinely planning to extend President Sata’s term to eight years from the current constitutional five without subjecting him to an election, United Party for National Development (UPND) President Hakainde Hichilema has warned.
Mr Hichilema has revealed that President Sata and the PF were determined to have Parliament dominated by the ruling party so that they could find it easy to manipulate the draft constitution and sneak in a clause that would extend the presidential term to eight years.
Mr Hichilema said President Sata and his surrogate rulers comprising a cartel holding him hostage, have realized that Mr Sata would never go past his first term and were scheming to unconstitutionally extend his term so that he would not be subjected to an election until after 2019.
Mr Hichilema said the popularity the Patriotic Front (PF) and President Michael Sata claimed to be enjoying was coerced and deceptive because it was anchored on brutal repression of citizens, intimidation, fear, corruption and retribution.
The UPND leader has warned Zambians to be extra alert because Mr Sata’s surrogate rulers would want to maximize their plunder in the coming years and believed that five years was not enough time to build their financial empires.
He said Zambia was at the brink of being turned into a Kleptocratic state where the people in power had a grand desire to shamelessly steal and were ready to crush any citizen who would stand in their way of acquiring wealth through open corruption.
Mr Hichilema has called on all the opposition political parties and the general citizenry to unite against the Sata regime that has confirmed that it was working towards turning Zambia into a despotic country.
Mr Hichilema has maintained that the PF was training militia that would be used to terrorize Zambians so that they could be cowed into accepting and voting for the ruling party at any election including the 2016 general elections.
Mr Hichilema said the propensity by the PF to obliterate the opposition was anchored on the belief that the opposition was an impediment to their desire to perpetuate the hegemony that was being promoted by the supporters of the one party state.
He stated that the PF had already started dismantling institutions of good governance such as the judiciary which has suffered extreme pressure from the executive that has on several occasion disregarded court orders and rulings with impunity.
“I know that Sata and his friends think they can scare the judiciary, the opposition and Parliament using their brutal tactics. They are doing this because they know that Mr Sata will not go past this term and they are scheming to elongate the presidential term to eight years so that Mr Sata could have his first term extended without being subjected to another election. Fighting this regime should not only be the duty of the opposition political parties but all Zambians because Mr Sata and the PF have formally declared that they would want to see Zambia return to a one party state by wiping out the opposition,” Mr Hichilema said.
He said any democratic government in the world would not be happy to wipe out the opposition saying only a dictator would have the desire to kill the opposition so that he would have no challengers to his despotic governance.
Mr Hichilema said had the MMD, the former ruling party decided to wipe out the opposition, Mr Sata would never have formed his PF and would never have been president of the country.
He said the PF should be ready to face the wrath of Zambians should they manipulate the constitution to meet their selfish desires of attempting to govern the country by deception.
