Zyambo charged with sedition as Hamasaka is released

One of the two journalists, Thomas Zyambo, who were arrested by police, has been charged with sedition while Clayson Hamasaka has been released without being questioned.

Under the Zambian law sedition is wide and may include any conduct that the authorities choose though it mainly relates to advocating insurrection against government and carries a seven year sentence.Hamasaka has been released without being questioned though he was informed that investigations would continue.

Zyambo was according to the police, found with handwritten notes of the life history of President Michael Sata.His charge is therefore that ‘being in possession of seditious material with intent to publish.’His lawyers were by press time trying to secure a police bond for him.

But there has been widesprad outrage by local and international media organisations protesting against harrasment of the journalists with tha Media institute of sothn africa claiming that rthe rights of journalists was being abloagated.
