The opposition MMD is today expected to petition the Electoral Commission of Zambia for allowing the ruling PF to campaign in Mansa Central before a period of campaigns is declared.
This follows the decision by the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) party to hold rallies in the constituency even before the election day is declared by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).
The Mansa seat fell vacant after the demise of Kennedy Sakeni who was the area MP.
Party deputy national secretary Chembe Nyangu told the Daily Nation that his party would hand in the petition to the ECZ today.
He said it was shameful that Dr Guy Scott and his PF team had decided to hold campaign rallies disregarding the law.
He said it was sad that the party in power had continued to exhibit its arrogance towards the rule of law by going the illegal way.
Nyangu further complained that his party had on several times been denied permission to go and visit the party organs even after notifying the police.
“It is a shame to see the vice president who is expected to be the custodian of the law holding a rally when it is not yet time for campaigns. Why is he campaigning in Mansa when ECZ has not yet declared the day for elections?
Dr Mumba was denied permission even after notifying police in time that he wanted to visit party organs. Why should this go on? We blame both the ruling PF and police for not respecting the rule of law.
The PF should not take advantage because they were in power to abuse the law. We are taking our petition to ECZ tomorrow (today) so that ECZ can make a decision on the matter,” he said
Nyangu also advised electorates in Mansa to be brave by not believing the fake promises from the ruling party.
