Nkana turned on the style to dislodge Zesco United at the top of the MTN/FAZ league after thumping Nchanga Rangers 4-1 in a Week 24 match played in Wusakile.
Zesco slipped to second position after they were held to a 2-all draw by relegation battling Kalulushi Modern stars in the earlier fixture at the same venue.
The 11 time league kings have put themselves in good stead for a 12th title with six games remaining before the close of the season by opening a two point lead.
A brace apiece from Ronald Kampamba and Kelvin Mubanga gave coach Masautso Mwale’s side a deserved win.
Kelvin Mubanga gave Nkana a flying start with a first minute strike that sent the sea of red in the stands wild.
But the visitors replied in the 16th minute through a Martin Daka connection from a well struck Alex Ng’onga free kick.
Nkana were back on top in the 37th minute through Mubanga who made it a brace and forced Nchanga Rangers coach Fighton Simukonda to withdraw goalie Toaster Nsabata who was having a horrendous time at the office for Rabson Mcheleng’anga.
Mucheleng’anga’s arrival did not help matters as he was rudely welcomed by a Kampamba goal after a long throw from Donashano Malama in injury time of the first half.
On resumption of play Kampamba completed his brace when he benefited from a George Chilufya blunder at the back and lobbed the ball over Mucheleng’anga to make sure of the three points.
The win lifted Nkana to 48 points, two better than Zesco with the Wusakile boys having the advantage of a game in hand.
Coach Masautso Mwale has warned his players against complacency if the Wusakile boys are to reclaim the Super Division title the won for 11 years successively.
Mwale has maintained that his players must not under rate any team in the league as they aim for the title.
Mwale said there is no need for his players to be relaxed but focussed as the season draws closer to the end adding that underrating any team could spell doom for the team.
“We have to keep running and winning the last game because we are focussed on reclaiming the title and so far we have demonstrated that we are game. I only hope the players remain focused” he said.
Earlier Zesco United twice surrendered the lead as they settled for a 2-all draw against Kalulushi Modern Stars.
Angel Kalangu had conceded an own goal in the 23rd minute but Clarence Berrington restored parity in the 32nd minute.
Jackson Mwanza put Zesco ahead in the 66th minute with a tap in from a John Ching’andu cross but a bicycle kick by Josephat Kasusu in the 72nd minute leveled matters and ensured that the two sides shared spoils.Zesco is in second position on 46 points.Zesco Coach Chembo has vowed not to give up the title race and has also instructed his players to win the remaining matches to secure the 4th title for the Ndola based side which has been mandated by their sponsors to win the title.
“We have no choice but to win the remaining games for us to bring home the title and the players know what is at stake” Chembo said.
