One man is confirmed dead and many others injured in the deadly violence that erupted yesterday when the pro-Wynter Kabimba faction mobilised to repel the rival group that intended to attend President Michael Sata’s function to register their case for the removal of secretary general Wynter Kabimba.
The anti-Kabimba group led by Julius Komaki, which was carrying a mock Kabimba coffin were blocked and confronted by rival group which was armed with machetes and other offensive weapons.
A bloody confrontation erupted at the Airport junction as the anti-Kabimba faction scampered. The group leader Komaki was hacked but later spoke against violence from his hospital bed.
The Komaki group that has been demanding the expulsion of Kabimba were on their way to the airport where they intended to show their displeasure over the continued stay of the Justice Minister as secretary general of the party.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that four people were killed as a result of the clash between PF cadres whose major differences have been the endorsement of President Sata as the sole candidate for the 2016 general elections.
And Lusaka came to a standstill when minibus drivers and other motorists rushed out of the central business district when armed thugs descended on the PF district offices by force.
By press time, there were reports that the University Teaching Hospital was flooded with PF cadres who had been injured as a result of the clash.
Levy Mwanawasa Hospital was yesterday sealed by riot police and no visitor were allowed to enter the hospital to visit their relatives.
And the PF cadres wielding machetes pangas and other homemade crude weapons caused mayhem in the central business district of Lusaka and spontaneously attacked unsuspecting vendors and it took some quick action by the police to calm down the situation.
PF cadres armed with an assortment of weapons including pangas, axes, iron bars and wooden plunks attacked a convoy of vehicles ferrying some senior district officials among whom was Komaki to Kenneth Kaunda International Airport where President Sata was scheduled to lay a foundation stone for the construction of a new airport terminal.
An eye witness said that a white Noah motor vehicle belonging to a known Councillor in Kanyama Constituency brought a group of armed PF thugs who have been against the endorsement of President Sata attacked the Komaki convoy.
“We just saw the Noah bus block our way that is when some guys jumped out with pangas and iron bars and began beating up everybody.
When they found the chairman (Komaki), about four guys descended on him hacking and stabbing the man several times in the neck before he was rescued and rushed to hospital,” the witness said.
The cadres carrying a miniature mock coffin of Justice Minister and PF secretary general Kabimba were blocked from entering the Airport grounds where President Michael Sata was.
And business came to a standstill at the Intercity Bus Terminus when the armed cadres shifted camp from the airport to the station targeting fellow cadres at the facility.
Taxis and large buses from the station drove off in all directions after armed cadres arrived from various constituencies around the city.
