Lozis shocked

The decision by Government to charge Lozi’s supporting Linyungandambo with treason has shocked Lozi people who expected the Patriotic Front Government to be sympathetic to the organization and to the restoration of the Barotse agreement.

Speaking in Parliament yesterday Liuwa Member of Parliament Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane said the people of Barotseland felt betrayed that Government had reneged on  the promises made by the Patriotic Front in the run up to the 2011 Presidential and General elections.

The situation in the area, he said, was so tense that some people were afraid of sleeping in their houses and were instead sleeping in the swamps in fear of being arrested for supporting the Linyungandambo who have been advocating for secession of the area.

The people, he said, were genuinely shocked and concerned that Government appeared intent on punishing them for a pursuing a cause on which they had previously agreed upon.

“The people really believed that the Patriotic Front was a friend to the Linyungandambo and therefore gave their support during the elections because they expected to benefit from the relationship.” He said.

It was for this reason, he said, that the people were genuinely shocked that the PF, the  party that did not only promise to restore the Barotse agreement but also described the Linyungandambo as a peaceful and well meaning organization, was now arresting them for treason.

“The people feel abandoned they feel that they were used to get votes.” he said.

Dr. Musokotwane who was speaking during the budget debate on the vote for the Ministry of Home Affairs said it was sad that the money that was being apportioned would be used among other things to bring grief to the Barotse people through the security forces that would be operating in the area.
