The Mo Ibrahim prize for African leadership which honours African leaders who have advanced democracy in their countruiies and have left political office constitutionally should be renamed the Nelson Mandela prize for Afrian Leadrship, National Restoration Party (NAREP) president Elias Chipimo has proposed.
Chipimo said renaming the world’s presitigous prize for African leader after the name of the global icon and anti aparthied hero would be the best way of honouring M,andela for his selfless and dedication to fighting all forms of injustice and serving humanity.
Chipimo told the Daily Nation that Africa and the world should honour the contributions Mandela had made by setting aside a day to remember the world’s most reverd man who had resisted aparthied to the point of sacrificing his life in jail for 27 years.
He said it would be a befiting tribute to Mandela for the United Nations (UN) to move a motion and declare the Nelson Mandela’s date of birth as Nelson Mandela Day which would be a constant reminder to leaders that have created divisions within their societies.
He has called on African leaders and the world over to fully embrace the values of democracy for which Mandela was ready to pay the highest price for the sake of humanity.
The NAREP leader said Mandela, fondly known as Madiba had been able to identify the humanity in each and every person regardless of colour, race, creed and religion, the realisation that there was capacity for good in everyone.
Chipimo described Mandela as a colossus leader who was loved and revered by the world for the example of a great moral leadership he had set for South Africa, the African continent and the world at large.
“It would be a befiting tribute for the members of the United Nations to move a motion to declare Nelson Mandela’s date of birth as Nelson Mandela Day.
Let the day be a constant reminder to leaders that have created divisionswithin their societies of the need to fully embrace true democratic ideals. Let the Mo Ibrahim prize for African Leadrship which honours African leaders who have advanced democracy in their countries and left political office constitutionally be renamed Nelson Mandela prize for African Leadership,” Chipimo said.
