Plot to expel GBM exposed

A plot to expel former Defence Minister Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba from the ruling Patriotic Front has been exposed and is reported to have reached an advanced stage.

The provincial leadership has asked party officials in Kasama constituency and district to officially write to the provincial executive committee complaining that GBM had put the name of the party and President Michael Sata into disrepute.

PF officials who met last week on Thursday at Kasama Municipal Council Chambers discussed among other issues the divisions that have rocked the party in the area as a result of the decision by President Michael Sata’s government not to recognise Paramount Chief Chitimukulu  Henry Kanyanta Sosala and the subsequent resignation of Mwamba from cabinet.

The officials said that the only way to go over the current situation was to expel GBM from the party, adding that suspension alone of the former minister would not help the party as he was still strong and able to mobilise using party structures especially in the constituency.

“We also asked the leadership as to why the provincial leadership had shown keen interest in the matter before the constituency and district could lodge a complaint against the former minister? But nobody answered that apart from telling us that they were also following instructions left by the ministers  who visited Kasama last week,” said one of the officials. But PF Kasama District youth secretary Chanda Nsofu has warned the party leadership to abandon the scheme as it would work against the leadership in the region.

The expulsion will automatically mean that Mwamba ceases to be Kasama Central Member of Parliament.

Under the scheme, the Northern Province executive committee is expected to charge Mwamba with conduct that has brought the name of the party and the President into disrepute.

The plot involves some named senior provincial officials who will coerce the constituency and district officials to present a petition to the province for GBM’s expulsion.

However Mwamba has reiterated that he had nothing wrong in the party, for the leadership to unleash attacks on him and his family, adding that he was still a member of the PF and would continue supporting President Sata.

The officials however said that some party officials at the province were looking forward to the expulsion because they had not been adopted to contest the Kasama Central seat in the last parliamentary election.

The officials also revealed that party officials felt that GBM had a hidden agenda which was detrimental to the progression of PF in the region.

“Nangula umwana mung’anda tatulolela abafyashi abaume ukuti bese balande nankwe  na nyina kuti a muchita discipline. So even us we can go ahead to discipline GBM pantu nabika inshina lya party muchifulunganya. People think that there is no leadership in the party. Can ba GBM honestly do what he has done if at all he doesn’t want to defect?” one of the officials in the meeting said.

But Nsofu said that GBM was not a blind loyalist like some of the ministers in the PF.

“GBM is not a blind loyalist and that is why he resigned as minister of defence after seeing that President Sata had refused to gazette Paramount Chief Chitimukulu. Blind loyalists have lead presidents to destruction.

“Blind loyalists destroyed Kaunda’s government. Blind loyalists destroyed Chiluba’s government. Blind loyalists destroyed RB’s government. For Zambia to develop efficiently we need alert loyalists like GBM, ,” said Nsofu. Nsofu said that Bembas were not happy with the way Paramount Chief Chitimukulu was being treated by government.
