MMD vice President Michael Kaingu has described as arrant nonsense suggestions that he was being funded by the Patriotic Front (PF) to destabilize opposition Movement for Multi Party Democracy (MMD).
His constant quest to reach across the party divide was a matter of political imperative to ensure progress on matters of mutual interest that transcended narrow political schisms.
“I admit I met Kabimba, and discussed a number of issues including the constitution, our cars that have been confiscated and other issues, which I am not at liberty to disclose. I have never, and will never receive money from PF, UPND, NAREP, or any other political party” he said.
Dr. Kaingu said that he was outraged by suggestions that he may have betrayed his colleagues and opposition fraternity, “It was for this reason that I publicly called on Kabimba to disclose the nature of our discussion in parliament. Unfortunately he did not honour my request.”
Dr. Kaingu explained that his desire for new leadership for the MMD was meant for the good of the party because President Sata was too powerful a candidate to be matched against Dr. Nevers Mumba or any other opposition candidate.
“If President Sata stands in 2016, given the political scenario that is prevailing at the moment, he will win, without any doubt. That is why we need a candidate who will match him.”
Meanwhile Dr. Kaingu has accused party national chairman Kabinga Pande of being timid and shy to meet the demands of the general membership to have party president Nevers Mumba ousted.
But Mr Pande said it was unwise to continue a war of words with Dr Kaingu and others.
Dr Kaingu said that President Michael Sata would win the 2016 general election because there was no match for him.
Featuring on Millennium Radio yesterday on the Interview Programme, Dr. Kaingu said that Mr. Pande was timid and shy to act on the petition pushing for the national convention. He said that it was a pity that despite party members at various organs of the MMD petitioning the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to call for the convention, Mr. Pande was exhibiting high levels of timidity and shyness.
“It is a pity that the national chairman is not willing to announce the resolutions from the provinces over the convention. It is a pity that the National Chairman is timid, he is shy to make the necessary announcement,” said Dr. Kaingu. He said that it was laughable and nonsensical that some party officials could suggest that the petitions they had received were fake. “We strongly believe that in our current form we are not able to offer the necessary checks and balances. Ever since the call for the conventions started we have not participated actively in the national matters. You are aware that when the constitutional controversy started MMD played an upper role in the fight for the new constitution,” he explained. He felt sad that the MMD was not effectively offering checks and balances to the ruling party because of its compromised leadership led by Dr. Mumba.Dr. Kaingu noted with sadness that MMD under Dr. Mumba would go into oblivion due to lack of leadership. But Mr Pande has charged that he was not going to run the affairs of the MMD through the media and that the accusations by Dr Kaingu could not make him breach the party constitution just to please a selected group. The party chairman said he was determined to run the party in the best interest of the people that that Dr Kaingu’s assertions should be ignored because administration and governance was not done through the media.
