Some Patriotic Front (PF) members of Parliament (MPs) and ministers are secretly working with the opposition UPND because they have realised that the ruling party has become a failed project that would not go past the first term, says UPND president Hakainde Hichilema.
And Mr Hichilema has declared that he would not present himself before a Parliamentary select committee because the committee was nothing but a scheme meant to convict the UPND leader and technically knock him out of the presidential race in the 2016 general elections.
Meanwhile, Mr Hichilema has charged that the re-appointment of Justice Lombe Chibesakunda as acting Chief Justice was the worst judicial scandal ever and has advised that the office holder must take the honourable option of vacating her office because she was an illegality in the judicial system.
Mr Hichilema said it was not surprising that some PF ministers and MPs were courting the UPND because they were ever being ridiculed and embarrassed by President Sata.
He was addressing journalists in Lusaka yesterday at the UPND secretariat.
The UPND leader said he had been meeting some of the PF MPs and Ministers and that the UPND was assessing whether the opposition political party could trust them because the PF was full of people who were more interested in their selfish political interests.
Mr Hichilema said President Sata should know that the ministers and MPs were secretly courting the UPND because it had become clear that many of them were being frustrated by a selected group of unelected people who were controlling the ruling party.
He revealed that some ministers had informed him (Hichilema) that although PF secretary general Wynter Kabimba was going round the country projecting his own image, the Justice Minister had no support in cabinet and the central committee.
“We have been meeting some of the PF MPs and ministers and we are examining them to see whether they are not just interested in sharing jobs when we form government. We have been discussing with some of them and they have told us how frustrating it is to work with President Sata. They are being embarrassed and ridiculed each time he addresses them and it is not surprising that they are coming to us. They have realised that the PF is a one-term government and they have also discovered that Zambians are angry with the PF and they have the liberty to interact with the UPND,” Mr Hichilema said.
And Mr Hichilema has vowed that he was not going to present himself before the Parliamentary select committee because the letter summoning him was unsigned and could be a hoax.
“The letter they wrote summoning me was not even signed and this shows you that the systems of governance have completely broken down. I know there is a scheme by the PF to use any institution to knock me out of the presidential race but I am ahead of them. I will not appear before that committee because it is a hoax,” Mr Hichilema said.
And the UPND leader has said that Justice Chibesakunda would remain the most discredited acting Chief Justice because she was an illegality in the judiciary although President Sata had imposed her on the judicial system.
Mr Hichilema said Justice Chibesakunda should consider stepping down because it was injudicious for her to remain perpetually acting in the office of the Chief Justice for a full term of the PF governing period.
He said Zambia had many talented and excellently qualified young legal minds that had been judges who could serve Zambia as Chief Justice adding President Sata was frustrating the younger generation by his continued appointing of retired and redundant old people.
The UPND leader has also condemned the continued harassment of Paramount Chief Chitimukulu of the Bemba people and has pledged that the UPND in power would recognize and gazette the traditional leader because he was the legitimate heir to the Mwinelubemba throne.Mr Hichilema has also stated that it was inhuman and uncaring for the PF government to embark on the demolition of houses in Kitwe’s Mindolo Township without having an alternative solution to the problem.
