Opposition UPND Members of Parliament are not for auction and will always speak on behalf of the people they represent, says party deputy spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa.
Mr. Mweetwa said in an interview that it was sad that some people were circulating rumours that some UPND MPs among them, himself, were about to defect to the ruling party.
“I want to categorically state that UPND members and MPs are not for auction. We cannot and shall not sell our souls to the PF. We are content with what we have in the opposition. Zambians want us to offer checks and balances to PF,” said Mr. Mweetwa.
He said rumours circulating suggesting that some UPND officials including himself would at some point work with the PF were unfounded and untrue.
Mr. Mweetwa said Zambians were not interested any more in the PF politics and way of doing things, adding that for the opposition, it was time to seriously mobilise.
“What is preoccupying us now is mobilising the party in readiness for elections. We are not scared of the PF,” he said
And Mr. Mweetwa has said that his party would not accept any form of intimidation from both police and PF cadres.
He said the recent events where UPND members were attacked in the presence of police were a sign that there was a breakdown in the rule of law in the country.
The Choma Central Parliamentarian also observed that the PF agenda of only developing areas where they have presence was detrimental to the development of the nation.
“Democracy entails that power should be shared and our colleagues are using arrogance of being in power to fix others. This should not be left unchecked. There is no way Zambians would and should allow such things to continue in this country.
“I have problems with senior members of the PF suggesting that they would only develop areas where they have MPs and members. This is backward thinking by the leadership. It is only fair that the people of Zambia enjoy equal or fair benefits because we are all tax payers,” said Mr. Mweetwa.
