Petauke District Commissioner Velenasi Banda says women empowerment is critical to addressing gender based violence in homes.
Ms. Banda said women empowerment programmes could be used as interventions in addressing cases of gender based violence recorded country wide.
She said cases of gender based violence would soon reduce following government’s efforts aimed at empowering the women fork in rural areas.
Ms Banda saluted government for paying attention to the needs of the women in rural communities.
She said this in an interview with ZANIS at her office yesterday.
Ms Banda added that women have the potential and capacity to contribute to food security at community and national level.
She expressed happiness with the assistance the Ministry of Gender and Child Development was rendering to women clubs in the district.
Ms Banda noted that the help government is giving to the women clubs would soon start bearing fruits as women implement their various empowerment projects in the district.
She has since urged the Ministry of Gender to consider capturing more women clubs in the district.
