ZAMBIA’s World Boxing Council (WBC) silver bantamweight champion Catherine Phiri will now fight a South Africa boxer.
WBC international secretary for Africa Nelson Sapi announced Bukiwe Nonina is the new opponent for Catherine.
Bukiwe, 23 is the current South African bantamweight champion with a record of 8 fights, 6 wins through 2 knock outs and 2 losses.
Sapi said the World Boxing Council could not postpone Catherine’s fighter after the first opponent Korean boxer Hee-Jung Yuh pulled out owing to Ebola outbreak in some parts of Africa.
“I have been mandated by the World Boxing Council to announce Catherine Phiri’s new opponent after her opponent pulled out because of the Ebola outbreak in some parts of Africa,” he said.
Sapi who is also Zambia Professional Boxing and Wrestling Control Board (ZPBWCB) chairperson said, he wanted to make sure that the bout took place as scheduled in November.
And Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions (OQPB) stables manager Christopher Malunga expressed happiness after the announcement of Catherine’s new opponent.
“We are happy that Catherine’s opponent has been found after Hee-Jung Yuh pulled out,” Malunga said.
He also announced that Hotel Diamondacres has sponsored K25, 000 in form accommodation logistics.
“We have so far managed to raise K450, 000 out of our total budget of K673, 000. And we want to thank Hotel Diamondacres for coming on board with the sponsorship of K25, 000,” Malunga explained.
