Lusaka residents have called on government to ensure that unsung freedom fighters are honoured for the role they played during the struggle for independence.
They said this was aimed at ensuring a befitting celebration of Zambia’s 50 years of independence.
One of the residents Mark Musendo said the trend of honouring particular individuals should come to an end.
He said authorities should strategize on how to identify the unsung freedom fighters ,adding that most of them lived in rural areas. It was regrettable that the same list of people was usually honoured during past independence celebrations witnessed in the country.
“This trend must come to an end as Zambia celebrates the Golden Jubilee of independence with authorities strategizing on how they will identify the unsung freedom fighters,” he said
Mr Musendo said it was not fair that the unsung freedom fighters who sacrificed a lot for Zambia have nothing to show for their efforts
He was speaking during Millennium Radio’s ‘‘Newspaper pick’’ programme yesterday.
This year Zambia would be commemorating its 50 year of independence.
