Opinion polls deceiving- Mulongoti

TWO political parties have rubbished opinion polls conducted in Zambia, saying they are irrelevant to the outcome of elections.

People’s Party president Mike Mulongoti yesterday described the opinion polls as nothing but a sheer waste of time.

Recently, a privately own television station, Muvi, conducted an opinion poll whose results showed that the opposition UPND would win the presidential election by a landslide.

Mr Mulongoti said the political parties that were relying on opinion polls to gauge their popularity and chances of winning the election were doing so at their own peril.

He said there was no way UPND could be ahead of other major political parties such as Patriotic Front and MMD when it came third in the 2011 general elections.

Mr Mulongoti said the results of the 2011 elections should not be undermined as they were likely to have a similar pattern even in the January 20 polls. He said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that opinion polls should not be encouraged because they have a potential to mislead the nation.

Mr Mulongoti advised political players from all parties not to be detracted but continue with their campaigns and reach out to as many people as possible so that they could woo their support.

And Zambia Republican Party (ZRP) president Wright Musoma said the opinion poll results were pathetic.

He said Mr Hichilema could not have 80 per cent while Mr Lungu 16 per cent in an election.

Mr Musoma said his party was not disturbed with the opinion polls because it was aimed at deceiving the nation.
