Chama who had stormed the finals after finishing third in the semi-finals with a time record of 1.52.92 minutes failed to replicate the good performance” and came last from a group of 8.

The Zambian runner started the race on a high note but lost steam in the last 50 metres of the race.

Kenya’s Willy Tarbei won the race cloaking 1.46.05 minutes while Belt Kipyego scooped silver with a time record of 1.46.15 minutes.

Zambia’s Abigail Chongo also finished last in the 200m women’s final.  She cloaked 25.63 seconds which was below her personal best time of 25.53 seconds she had earlier set in the semi-finals.  The winner Idamadudu Oghenefejiro of Nigeria timed 23.30 seconds.

National youth coach Sydney Mushipi said the two athletes starting was good but lost steam at the finishing of the race.

Mushipi however said the Commonwealth Youth Games was a competitive event and therefore the athletes put in their level best.

“The athletes faced tough competition in the finals. We just need to work on the finishing part as we look ahead to the next assignment,

They are still young and can improve on today’s performance. I urge them not to lose hope but remain focused,” he said.
