Officers at the Department of National Registration in Kitwe are doing a very recommendable job, says Kitwe District Commissioner Chanda Kabwe.
Mr. Kabwe observed that Kitwe was a growing district and that the population was also rapidly expanding, hence the delay in the issuance of National Registration Cards (NRCs). He said Kitwe was the second largest city in Zambia and that the number of people in need of NRCs was increasing every day.
“The number of people in need of these services is increasing, almost every day someone is attaining the age of 16 for them to get NRCs, so when the population grows; you expect the demand for these services to increase”. Mr. Kabwe said registration officers on the ground were doing a recommendable job, as the department issues NRCs to over 500 people per day.
“I can safely say my officers are doing well and all is well, we give out not less than 500 NRCs per day,” he said
He noted that the issuance process seemed to take long because of the verification process.
“People can’t expect that once they come to get an NRC they would be attended to within minutes, we are cautious on issuance of these NRCS, because if we are not careful we may give these to foreigners,” he said.
He said the department was doing everything possible to ensure that people got their NRCs on time. Mr. Kabwe has however, appealed to Kitwe residents to turn out in masses to get NRCs when the mobile registration was launched in the district
“People must bear with us, we are doing everything possible and we’ll soon launch the mobile registration, Copperbelt is in the last phase”, he said
