TRADITIONAL leaders in Sinazongwe have threatened to petition President Edgar Lungu over the shoddy road works on the stretch between Kanyemba and Syameja which they claim is part of Bottom Road project.
But the Road Development Agency (RDA) says the stretch in question does not fall within the Bottom Road project and has since distanced itself from the contractor.
Last week RDA explained that the project in question fell under the ministry of local government and housing.
However, the traditional leaders have angrily reacted to RDA’s statement claiming they knew the road better than the agency and would not be lectured on which stretch was part of the Bottom Road.
In a letter by Chief Mweemba’s senior headman Mugonko to RDA board chairperson Samuel Mukuka dated September 28, 2015 which was also copied to area Member of Parliament Richwell Siamunene, the traditional leaders want the contractor to leave or re-do the the entire stretch or face eviction.
Senior headman Mugonko said the people of Gwembe Valley deserved the best under the project and not substandard works that the contractor was doing
“The Bottom Road stretches from Siavonga via Gwembe to Sinazongwe and joins Zimba district on the way.
The beneficiaries are the people of the Gwembe Valley and these are the people who were displaced by the construction of the Kariba Dam,” he said
He explained that there was need for RDA to send engineers to ascertain the situation.
“This is serious negligence on the part of RDA. What RDA should do is send qualified engineers to ascertain if the contractor is doing the rightful thing rather than defending itself,” he said
