ZAMBIA Association for Women in Construction (ZAWIC) has hailed Government’s continued commitment to empowering women through policies and directives.
ZAWIC vice president Queen Chisha said Government’s decision to allocate 30 percent of local road tendering contracts to women through the Road Development Agency (RDA) has elated the association.
Mrs. Chisha said the decision is a sign that the Government is keen on empowering women.
“As ZAWIC we are proud of our Government because the pronouncement has shown the faith and confidence that the Government has in our ability to perform and deliver,” she said. She told Daily Nation in Solwezi that the 30 percent awarded in road tendering has boosted a lot of construction companies run by women.
The ZAWIC vice president said the contracts have motivated women to participate in infrastructure development across the country.
Mrs. Chisha said the women in North-Western Province have tendered for various road works and buildings to be done in the province and are yet to be awarded.
She noted that the women are anxious to work and contribute positively to the country’s economy.
“The women in the province are bidding actively and will strive to do quality work once awarded contracts,” she said.
She said the association has women trained in construction and other related fields to work with men in improving and putting up the much needed infrastructure through sustainable ways.
Mrs. Chisha called on women in the country to take advantage of the gesture and actively participate in construction ventures.
She said the active participation of women in contributing to the country’s growth was a step towards achieving gender equality and women empowerment.
