NAPSA Stars’ hopes of escaping the relegation zone yesterday suffered a big blow after losing to ‘Mighty’ Mufulira Wanderers 1-0 in a week 26 Super Division match played at Woodlands Stadium in Lusaka.
The match started on a low note with both teams failing to create clear scoring chances in the first 20 minutes.
Wanderers however upped the tempo but still failed to convert the chances through Eric Chibuye and Mike Katiba who fluffed up the golden opportunities.
In the second half, Wanderers’ coach Manfred Chabinga substituted Chibuye for Moses Nyambe in the 46th minute and that changed the rhythm of the match for the visitors with Katiba and Jacob Ngulube coordinating well.
Six minutes later, Nyambe found the back of the net through a header from inside the box to give Wanderers the needed three points.
NAPSA Stars regained position after 70 minutes of play but Wanderers goal keeper Joshua Manyongo made brave saves to deter an equaliser.
Chabinga praised his boys for putting up a strong fight to record a win in an away game.
He said it was a tough match as NAPSA Stars were in the relegation zone and a win was central to them.
Wanderers now have 41 points while NAPSA are on 24 and the ‘pension’ lads must win the four remaining games to survive relegation.
Meanwhile, Green Buffaloes, the Zambia Army sponsored outfit, beat Nkana 2-1 in a match played at Woodlands Stadium.
Nkana kicked off the game on a high note but striker Walter Bwalya failed to convert the chances.
Buffaloes coach Bilton Musonda later substituted captain Christopher Katongo who has been struggling with injury for Lottie Phiri in the 32nd minute.
The change paid dividends as Stephen Kabamba put Buffaloes one up through a header in the 45th minute to send Nkana supporters into silence.
In second half, Nkana pressurised the Buffaloes defence which earned them a penalty in the 47th minute, but Walter Bwalya’s spot kick went over the bar.
Buffaloes second goal came in the 53rd minute through Sebastian Mwansa who produced a hot shot which Nkana goalie failed to stop.
In the 76th minute, Jimmy Ndlovu’s thunderbolt shot from outside the box gave Nkana a consolation goal.
Nkana continued to look for a second goal, but Buffaloes defenders were equal to the task.
