I’m not sick, says Mumba

National Restoration Party (NRP) president Cosmo Mumba, reported by the Post newspaper to have been evacuated to India after collapsing, says he is not sick and will today hold a Press conference in Lusaka to deny the story.

He has threatened to sue the newspaper for alleged publication of false news about his health after the tabloid reported in yesterday’s edition that he had collapsed and consequently evacuated to India.

Dr Mumba this week told the Daily Nation at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport that the Post hated him for supporting the PF Government and that to prove it the newspaper would in a few days carry a story to the effect that he had collapsed and the Government would fly him to India for specialist treatment.

‘’Do I look sick,’’ he asked. He said he was at the airport to accompany a relative who had been recommended for specialist attention in India. And it was learnt yesterday that Dr Mumba and his relative could not leave for India because the relative did not have  proper documentation from Zambian authorities.

The paper yesterday reported that Dr. Mumba had collapsed at Simoson Building last week because he was not feeling well and that he was rushed to a clinic where a medical doctor advised that he should be evacuated abroad for specialist medical attention. The paper reported that his nephew, Sekwila Mumba, confirmed that Dr. Mumba was evacuated to India on Tuesday evening in the company of his wife, Martha.

But Dr. Mumba told the Daily Nation yesterday that contrary to the Post newspaper story, he was not sick and that he had not even travelled to India because the patient he was escorting could not be allowed to travel by Emirates officials.

He explained that the group could not travel to India because his nephew had not obtained the medical certificate. “I told you on Tuesday evening that I was at the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport accompanying my nephew to India but we were told to disembark form the plane after the crew realised that we were taking a patient to India. They advised us that we needed a medical certificate for us to travel, which we have organised and tomorrow (today) we are leaving for India at 21:00hrs.

“This is contrary to Post’s story carried yesterday that I had been evacuated to India and this shows how desperate that newspaper organisation is about scandalising people by publishing stories without verification. Am not in India; am in Zambia. This is what happens when you are preoccupied with lies. The Post newspaper is lying as usual and they just want to scandalise me, but I will now sue them because it is too much,” Dr. Mumba warned.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mumba will today at 10:00hrs have a media breakfast at the Taj Pamodzi hotel.

“So, Iam inviting all the media houses to come so that they see for themselves whether I look like a person who needs specialist treatment in India or not. Am fit; for you, I was with you in that internet café when I was applying for visas for the people I was travelling to India with, did I look sick?” he asked.
