THE United Party for National Development (UPND) is enjoying ever growing popularity and the Patriotic Front (PF) must come to terms with the fact that the opposition political party is headed for victory in the 2016 general elections, Edward Mumbi has said.
Mr Mumbi said the defection of former PF deputy secretary general Bridget Atanga to the UPND should not be underplayed by the ruling party because Mrs Atanga was a serious factor in the country’s political scene.
He explained that the UPND had been transformed and it had become the most attractive political party and that Zambians were seeing the hope in the party and were ready for the party and its leader Hakainde Hichilema take over the governance of the country.
Reacting to PF Bahati Member of Parliament Harry Kalaba that the UPND was going to lose the 2016 general elections and that their popularity claims were nothing new, Mr Mumbi claimed that Zambians were angry with the ruling party for having failed to deliver on its many promises including the enactment of the new and people-driven Constitution.
Mr Mumbi advised that the PF should stop demeaning their leaders who were leaving the ruling party to work with the opposition political parties because as citizens, the enjoyed the rights to associate and belong to political parties of their choice.
He stated that demeaning and attacking members who did not agree with the ruling party was not the best way of playing politics stating that the PF should realise it was the party in Government and it was not politically healthy to lose members.
“The PF is the party in Government and should cultivate the culture of respecting the governed. The PF leadership must tone done on their language when talking about the opposition. As the UPND, we have always insisted that we must endeavor to play civil politics and PF must not demean their members who have decided to work with the opposition. If we are bragging about our popularity, the PF should not be worried but the truth is that the UPND has been transformed and it is high time the ruling party realised that Zambians are angry with the many and still unfulfilled promises,” Mr Mumbi said.
He said PF deputy secretary general Mumbi Phiri should have been the first one to be worried about the defection of Mrs Atanga to the UPND because the position she (Phiri) was currently holding was the same Mrs Atanga held and had a lot of followers.
