GOVERNMENT through the Food Reserve Agency has purchased over 700,000 metric tonnes of white maize from farmers in solwezi district valued at K16,412,000,acting solwezi district commissioner Chipawa Chipawa has disclosed.
Mr Chipawa told the Daily Nation in an interview that K11,935,000 out of K16,412,000 has been disbursed and farmers have been paid their monies.
“As of 16 October 2015 the food reserve agency had purchased about 218,838 by 50kg bags of white maize translating into 700,000 metric tonnes. And over K11,000,000 has been paid out to farmers,mr Chipawa said.
He said farmers who haven’t received their money should not panic as government was doing everything possible to clear the outstanding balance.
“Let me take this opportunity to urge some farmers who haven’t been paid yet not to panic because government has released funds and soon all our farmers will be paid,he said.
Mr Chipawa also said the district has received the farming inputs for the 2015/2016 farming season and urged farmers in the district to diversify into other crop such as cassava,groundnuts and vegetables among others than concentrating on maize alone.
Meanwhile,solwezi farmers association chairperson Winfridah Kalala has appealed to government to speed up the distribution of farm inputs to farmers in order to allow farmers prepare their fields on time.
