MILES Sampa must resign from his position as Patriotic Front (PF) Matero Member of Parliament if he wants to identify himself with the sufferings of the people in his constituency, PF deputy secretary general Mumbi Phiri has charged.
And Chief Government spokesperson Chishimba Kambwili has said that Mr. Sampa should not destroy the PF because it had respected his decision to resign from his position as deputy minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry.
Commenting on Mr. Sampa’s statement that he resigned from his Government position in order to mobilise the PF at the grassroots level and to feel the poverty that people in his constituency were going through, Ms. Phiri said the statement was ‘‘devoid of truth and a serious mockery’’ to Zambians.
She said Mr. Sampa was not truthful in his offer to join those who were wallowing in abject poverty because he was still swimming in the luxury that came with the position he held as MP and that if he was serious about his pronouncements, he should ‘‘give up everything and go back to Chitulika village where he comes from’’.
“That statement is just a mockery to the people of Matero and Zambia at large. How can he say he wants to taste the real poverty that the people in Matero are facing when he doesn’t even stay there? The level of poverty in Matero and that of Woodlands cannot be compared and so, if he is really serious about what he is talking about, let him follow the directive given by Jesus in the Bible about the young, rich ruler whom he told to sell everything he had and give the money to the poor.
“So, if he wants to taste real poverty, let him give up everything he has; the Jeep, the house and his position and go to Chitulika village where he comes from and face what people are going through. We will only believe him when he does so,” Ms. Phiri said.
She said the lack of honesty over Mr. Sampa’s reasons for resigning will be exposed with time because they lacked merit.
She wondered why Mr. Sampa had not reacted to Rachel Chileshe, a Lusaka resident who claimed that Mr. Sampa resigned because he felt side-lined.
And Mr. Kambwili said Mr. Sampa’s continued attacks on the PF did not benefit anyone other than the enemies of PF and his own enemies and that he should stop making unnecessary comments.
‘‘He has resigned and we respect his decision but someone does not need to destroy where he is coming from. I talked to him at Parliament yesterday (Wednesday) because he is my brother,” Mr Kambwili said.
Mr. Sampa yesterday asked Mr. Kambwili to stop making comments over his resignation from Government because he was not his spokesperson.
And Lusaka Province PF youth chairman Kennedy Kamba said Mr Sampa has rebelled against President Edgar Lungu and the Patriotic Front (PF) and was now working at destroying the ruling party’s grassroots structures to weaken the party before the 2016 general elections.
Mr Kamba warned that Mr Sampa should be ready to face the consequences of betraying the PF by scheming to weaken the ruling party so that the opposition could have a smooth and easy win next year.
Mr Kamba told the Daily Nation that the PF was aware that Mr Sampa was interacting with some opposition political party because he allegedly did not want the PF to continue governing under President Lungu.
