ZAMBIA ARMY sponsored side Green Buffaloes yesterday were crowned 2015 Barclays Cup champions by President Edgar Lungu after they beat Nkwazi  2-0in the finals played at Lusaka’s Nkoloma Stadium.

Meanwhile, the President said he was happy with the improved playing standards at club level.

“Standards of football have improved, I am impressed. I was supporting both teams, ”  he said.

Lungu made history by being the first sitting President to watch the Barclays Cup finals.

Despite finishing fourth in the Super League, Buffaloes put up a spirited fight to lift their maiden Barclays Cup title and a K350, 000 prize money.

Runners-up Nkwazi who have put up an impressive show this season walked away with K150,000.

First half Goals from Stephen Kabamba and skipper Christopher Katongo gave Buffaloes the much needed win.

Buffaloes dominated the first half with Katongo, Jasper Masiyaleti and Sebastian Mwansa terrorising Nkwazi defence.

Nkwazi could have opened the scores in 18th minute but Lottie Nyimbirie’s shot was saved by the goal minder Davy Kaumbwe.

Three minutes later,  Kabamba put Buffaloes on the lead by heading in Mwansa’s corner from  inside the box.

Nkwazi pushed for an equaliser in the 26th minute, Chipungu Musukuma’s long range shot was parried off by the keeper.

Buffaloes winning goal came in the 34th minute when they were awarded a penalty after Nkwazi goalie Makasa Kalaba brought down Masiyaleti inside the box to deter him from finding the back of the net .

Katongo made sure the opportunity didn’t go to waste with the ball resting on the corner of the net.

Mwansa came close to adding the icing on the cake with a crackar going over the crossbar in 41st minute.

In second half, Nkwazi looked set to upset Buffaloes lead, but produced blunt shots at goal.

Buffaloes coach Bilton Musonda said he was humbled to lead the team to their first Barclays title.

“I give praise to the boys for not losing focus till the last whitlse. It has not been an easy race but we give thanks to God,” he said.
