Govt tightens Societies Act

The Ministry of Home has directed that all societies of 10 or more members will now be required to register with the Registrar of Societies.

Ministry spokesperson, Moses Suwali, says acting Chief Registrar of Societies Thandiwe Mhende has decided that it was the requirement of the Societies Act Chapter 119 that all societies of 10 or  more persons should register under the Act.

“Societies like churches, political parties, professional associations, religious groups, community service groups, cultural, sportsmen and women and youth and farmers groups or clubs are required to register with the Registrar of Societies,” Ms Mhende said.

She advised societies to adhere to this lawful requirement to avoid being ‘‘found on the other side of the law’’.

Meanwhile, Mrs Mhende also revealed that the Registrar of Societies had computerized its operations in order to meet its objectives in a more effective and efficient manner.

She has appealed to all registered organizations to submit details which should include office bearers, branches and contact details such as telephone numbers, e-mails, physical and postal addresses.

Ms Mhende said that political parties should include party symbols as approved and registered under the Electoral Commission of Zambia.
