THE Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has recorded 1 424 918 new voters, 1 250 012 updates and 33 120 notifications of voters reported to have died as at December 3, 2015.
In a statement to the Daily Nation, ECZ public relations officer Raphael Phiri disclosed that Lusaka Province had so far recorded the highest number of new voters – 264 142 – while North-Western was the least with 62 878 new registrations.
Mr. Phiri reminded all Zambian citizens in possession of Green National Registration Cards and were 18 years of age and above to ensure that they register as voters before the end of the mobile voter registration on December 13, 2015.
He stated that the voter registration at the civic centres in all districts would continue as scheduled by the commission until March 31, 2016. He emphasised that no fee should be charged for issuance of a voter’s card.
“Members of the public should report any registration officer demanding payment to register as voters to the police,” Mr. said.
Mr. Phiri however warned that it was an offence to register more than once, adding that any person found wanting would be prosecuted.
He reiterated that the14-day mobile registration in March next year would take place as earlier announced, on dates to be determined by the commission. Mr. Phiri also urged persons living with disabilities to ensure that their disability was recorded.
“All persons living with disabilities are reminded to get their disability recorded by a registration officer even if they are already registered,” he said.
