Traditional healer denies assault

WELL-KNOWN traditional healer of Lusaka’s Kanyama compound Dr Kalonga Kanono appeared in the Lusaka Magistrates Court yesterday on two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Dr Kanono, whose real name is Chilufya Chileya, denied the charge when he appeared before Magistrate Prince Mwiinga. He denied having assaulted Oscar Mukadi.

Dr Kanono was granted K2,000 bail and two working sureties in the sum of K5,000 each.

The bail application was granted after defence counsel L. Zulu made an application.

But the State objected to the bail application, stating that although Kanono’s charge was bailable they  had received a report from the investigation officers that the accused had a series of similar offences.

The State contended that once the accused was bailed he was likely to commit similar offences.

In reply, Mr Zulu told court that the objections raised by the State were based on speculations as those reports from the intelligent officers were not before court as evidence.

Mr Zulu said when Kanono was called by the officers for investigations he availed himself to the police.

In his ruling, Mr Mwiinga granted Kanono bail pending trial. Meanwhile, police on Saturday launched investigations into a case in which Kanono was accused of defiling a minor of Kanyama.

The assault matter was adjourned to February 10, 2016 for commencement of trial.
