THE Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) can chose to print the ballot papers for the August general elections anywhere in the world but that will not stop the UPND from emerging victorious and take over the governance of the country, Charles Kakoma has declared.
Mr Kakoma who is UPND spokesperson said the opposition party had no intentions of boycotting the forthcoming general elections despite the ECZ having decided to print the key voting materials in Dubai.
He said the UPND would ensure that all manner of electoral misconduct was curtailed systematically.
Mr Kakoma claimed that there was no chance for the Patriotic Front (PF) to retain power because according to him, the ruling party had been a story of failure and mismanagement and that Zambians were now fed up.
He said in an interview yesterday that the UPND had formulated the best mechanisms of ensuring that the outcome of the election results were not manipulated in favour of the ruling party and claimed that the PF would be shocked with the margins of their defeat.
Mr Kakoma said the UPND had
strongly objected the printing of ballot papers from Dubai because the opposition party wanted to remove suspicions that some of the key voting materials would be pre-marked in favour of the ruling party.
He said the UPND objection to have ballots printed in Dubai was to ensure that there was credibility, confidence and transparency in the electoral process which had come under serious attack from a wide range of stakeholders.
Mr Kakoma said Government would have saved a lot of money if the ECZ had contracted the same South African printing company that had over the years been printing ballot parts for Zambia.
“We shall not boycott the forthcoming general elections on account of the ECZ having decided to print the ballot papers in Dubai because we know the UPND is going to emerge victorious. The ECZ can chose to print the ballot papers anywhere in the world but that will not make the PF remain in Government because we have formulated the best mechanisms to counter any form of electoral misconduct from the PF and we are not going to tell them how we are going to prevent manipulation,” Mr Kakoma said.
Mr Kakoma claimed the UPND was headed for a landslide victory and that those fantacising that the opposition party would be extinct would have to wait for their lifetime because the party was not going to die.
Mr Kakoma said Rainbow Party leader Wynter Kabimba should stop predicting political extinction for other political parties because his (Kabimba) party with his rejected socialist ideology would never go beyond its formation. He claimed that the political atmosphere in the country had changed and that Zambians were yet again yearning for change of Government because of the hardships they were going through.
Mr Kakoma claimed that the UPND had virtually taken over the Copperbelt where the PF was reigning supreme, boasting that its presidential running mate Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba was pulling mammoth crowds in the region.
He said Mr Mwamba as a presidential running mate for the opposition party could single-handedly fill the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium if he decided to hold a rally at one place on the Copperbelt.
