Police must protect journalists

THE Zambia Police should protect journalists ahead of the August 11th, 2016 general elections, National Restoration Party (NRP) president Cozmo Mumba has said.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka, Mr. Mumba said the period leading to the general elections was a crucial time for journalists because they could be assaulted.

“I am calling for a special unit of the Zambia Police to be assigned to protect journalists if they go to cover FDD, UPND, UNIP, MMD, PF and all political parties,” Dr. Mumba said.

Commenting on the closure of The Post newspaper, Dr. Mumba said the issue should not be politicised.

He said The Post must resolve its tax challenges with the Zambia Revenue Authority and therefore, should not blame the Government for breaching their statutory obligations.

“Let us not condemn government on the closure of The Post because the tabloid had time to raise money and pay. So I am appealing to Fred M’membe to pay the dues to the Zambia Revenue Authority and then prove that government is persecuting him,” he said.
