GREEN Buffaloes yesterday blocked Zesco United quest of closing in on leaders Zanaco when they held the FAZ Super Division champions to a 1-1 draw in Ndola.
The Zambia Army sponsored outfit put up a spirited fight at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in a rescheduled Week 14 match to deny Zesco the much needed six points.
ZESCO kicked off the game on a high speed in search of an erly opener.
Jackson Mwanza broke the deadlock in the 20th minute when he put Zesco ahead with a good strike.
The defending champions continued to look for a second goal but Buffaloes defence led by Buchizya Mfune could not be brought down.
Zesco came close to scoring minutes before half time but Jesse Were’s shot missed the target.
In second half Zesco continued their mission looking for a second goal but again produced blank shots.
Despite Buffaloes skipper Christopher Katongo failing to convert a spot kick, the defence force team managed to pull one back in the 82 minute through Brian Mwila.
Zesco have maintained second position on 32 points, eight behind leaders Zanaco while Buffaloes has 29 points.
However, Zesco has two games in hand. Zesco is this Saturday scheduled to host Asec Mimosa of Ivory Coast in a CAF Champions League Group A match.
Coach George Lwandamina said his lads played well despite failing to convert the chances.
Lwandamina said the draw would not have a negative bearing on the team ahead of the continental game.
“Well we have drawn although our target was to collect three points. The league is still in contention and we just have to work hard. Buffaloes are a good side and gave us a tough game. We will now focus on the Continental game this Saturday, ” he said.
