THE Green Party says the just ended Zambia International Trade Fair (ZITF) has outlived its conceptual framework and now requires a rethink.
Green Party president Peter Sinkamba said the Zambia International Trade Fair was intended to showcase the various export-quality products Zambia was producing then when the industrial base on the Copperbelt, especially in Ndola was vibrant, some 52 years ago.
Mr Sinkamba said the industrial base was merely a skeleton and consequently had been reduced to an exhibition of service provision such as banking, printing, airline, restaurants, bars, and others all of which literally added no value to international merchants.
He said the major international trade problem Zambia faced at the moment was trade balance.
“We have a trade deficit or negative balance of trade. Our imports exceed exports, which typically represents an outflow of domestic currency to foreign markets,” Mr Sinkamba said.
