Lungu preaches improved agriculture

THE transformation of agriculture is one of our top priorities because we believe that when the sector is productive, a farmer will have enough disposable income to afford other needs, President Edgar Lungu has said.

Addressing a rally in Nsumbu in Nsama district in the Northern Province yesterday, President Lungu said his Government recognised the important role farmers played in the economy and had, therefore, attached great importance to the sector to enable farmers maximise their potential.

He said contrary to his critics who he said had been claiming that he had failed; the Patriotic Front (PF) government had shown determination to roll out development even to the remotest parts of the country through infrastructure such as road construction in order to aid sectors such as agriculture.

He said road projects were important in farming communities because a good road network afforded Government to deliver farming inputs to farmers on time while providing ready market for producers.

“Since coming into power, we have managed to provide inputs to farmers on time and because we are a listening Government, we get advice from you. Right now, you are getting K85 per 50 kilogramme bag of maize you supply to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA).

“While others are saying that there is nothing we have done, we are constructing roads everywhere to reduce on the transport costs that our farmers are incurring when transporting their products to the market. This is a fishing area and we know that businessmen and women will come here and buy your fish and go back the same day when you have a good road network,” President Lungu said.

He also said that Government was concerned with the outbreaks of cholera every year in the area and that it was putting measures in place to ensure that sanitation was enhanced.

He said Government would ensure that more health facilities were constructed in the area as well as providing clean drinking water to the people in Nsumbu.

“We get concerned when we hear of cholera outbreaks here, and I want to assure you that Government will ensure that we provide quality drinking water to you so that we prevent these outbreaks. We are constructing health facilities across the country and we will ensure that we do the same here to improve access to health services,” he said.

He said there was need for people to vote for the PF for development to continue. “You have the power. You decide who should be voted for and who should not and this is why we are asking you to vote for us so that we continue developing this country,” he said
