Lumwana miner dies from burns

A MINER at Lumwana mine has died from burns after the dump truck he was operating caught fire.

Both North Western Province Commissioner of Police Lackson Sakala and Minerworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ) secretary general Joseph Chewe confirmed the incident in separate interviews.

Mr Sakala named the victim as 32-year-old Makson Kakompe of Manyama area in Senior Chief Mukumbis’s area in Kalumbila district.

He said the deceased met his fate when the dump truck he was operating caught fire after developing an electrical fault.

“Yes, I can confirm that there was a mine accident at Lumwana mine and one person died after suffering severe burns,” said Mr Sakala.

Mr Chewe regretted the death of Mr Kakompe. He said it was unfortunate that the deceased could die in such a situation which could have been avoided.

“The union is saddened at the death of our member, and it is our prayer that such an incident should not repeat itself in future,” he said.
