GBM falls ill, on bed rest

UPND running mate Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba (GBM) yesterday failed to open his trial in the Lusaka Magistrates Court in a matter he is accused of proposing violence against the President because he is unwell.

This came to light when defence lawyer Martha Mushipe availed to the court a sick report that showed that Mwamba was sick and not fit to stand trial and was seeking an adjournment.

And State prosecutor Dennis Manda did not object to the adjournment and said he had no control over one’s sickness and set September 28 for the commencement of trial.

However Mr Manda said the State were ready to commence with two witnesses who were before court.

He said the State witnesses who were scheduled to open trial were PF’s deputy spokesperson Frank Bwalya and Celestine Mkandire, a legal counsel of Shamwana and Company.

Mwamba was expected to open his trial after he lost an application to refer the matter to the Constitutional Court for determination.

The application by his lawyers was dismissed by Magistrate Jennifer Bwalya.
