THE Zambia Amateur Athletics Association (ZAAA) on Saturday proposed an estimated budget of K1,220,038 for the 2017 season.
At the ZAAA elective annual general meeting held at Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka, newly elected general secretary Davison Mung’ambata presented the 2017 budget to the members.
“Our estimated 2017 budget is K1,220,038 which will go towards the implementation of various activities. The regional budget is K874, 886 while the local one is K345,152. But we are hopeful that our well-wishers will come forward and assist financially.
‘‘Sending athletes to international engagements is not easy, we need adequate funding from National Sports Council of Zambia among others,” he said.
Despite the budget being approved, councilors rejected the K300 allowance to each athlete competing in national tournaments and proposed K600 per day.
ZAAA president Elias Mpondela said the association had a heart for athletes but failed to approve an allowance higher that K300 due to inadequate resources.
Mpondela said the ZAAA executive would consider the K600 proposed allowance before the next extraordinary AGM.
“It is the association’s desire to provide better allowances to our athletes. ZAAA exists because of them. We understand your concern and value it. I and the executive members here will look into it and present it at an extraordinary meeting. We will work hard to raise funds to motivate our athletes,” he said.
