Manyuchi knocks out Columbian

WORLD Boxing Council (WBC) silver champion Charles Manyuchi on Friday night knocked out Jose Agustin Feria of Colombia in first round in a non-title international fight staged in Harare, Zimbabwe.

The fight was in honour of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe.

And Zambian female boxer Lolita Muzeya was crowned WBC bronze champion after outclassing Agness Mtimaukanena from Malawi by a technical knock-out in third round during the same night.

The Zimbabwean born, Manyuchi, under the Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions (OQBP) of Zambia put up a splendid fight that lasted for two minutes and 42 seconds staged at a fully packed Harare International Conference Centre.

From the start, Manyuchi was unstoppable and unleashed powerful blows on Feria who lost zeal under a minute.

Manyuchi at times managed to toy around with Feria an indicator that the opponent was no match for the Zimbabwean.

It was in the second minute that Manyuchi unleashed   the knockout punch that sent Feria down and the Colombian could not beat the referee’s count.

Speaking after the fight, Manyuchi said Feria was a good boxer and just needed to work harder to outsmart him.

“Feria is a disappointment, sad that  he could not go further than the first round. I am happy that the tough training I endured paid off,” he said.

Feria said he could not withstand Manyuchi’s devastating blow.

“He is a champion and it is very unfortunate that I lost control and I was caught by a punch that knocked me out,” said Feria.

Coach Mike Zulu said Manyuchi displayed classic performance as a true World Champion in his own country.

“I am impressed by Manyuchi’s performance. He showed that he was a true champion on home soil which was great.  The crowing of Lolita Muzeya as WBC bronze champ is another great achievement for Zambia.” he said.

OQBP operations manager Christopher Malunga thanked the Zimbabwean government for successfully staging the event.

Feria, 33 had a record of 21 victories, three losses and a draw, while Manyuchi, 26,had 19 victories, two losses and a draw before the fight.
