STRIKER Collins Mbesuma on Friday night was instrumental in Highlands Park 2-0 victory over Chippa United to storm the 2016 Telkom quarter-finals. The Zambian striker broke the deadlock in the 12th minute scoring a re-bound from a Daniel Akpeyi mistake to put Highlands in the lead at Makhulong Stadium. It was the fourth goal of the season. Mbesuma continued to cause trouble for Chippa but failed to double the scores. After, 75th minute of play, Mbesuma was substituted for Edwin Sitayiatayi who doubled the scores two minutes after when he out-sprinted Marc van Heerden before lobbing an on-rushing Akpeyib to give Highlands the much needed victory. Goal Live reported that Highlands coach Gordon Igesunde was extremely happy to register a win on his first assignment. Igesunde who was expected to lead the Chipolopolo in the 2018 World Cup qualifier race was appointed Highlands coach after President Edgar Lungu revealed his preference for a local coach. Chippa looked for an immediate response and came close to getting the equaliser when Menzi Masuku’s pin-point header brought the best out of Tapuwa Kapini after 18 minutes. They continued their persistence with the first half drawing to a close, but found it difficult to break down a stubborn Highlands Park defence. Chippa pushed for the equaliser again at the start of the second half but were still unable to get Kapini and his back four. Kapini came to their rescue once again after 60 minutes when he denied Conrad Madolo from close range from Thembinkosi Lorch’s cross. The home side on the other hand looked to double their tally and they came close in the 74th minute when Thanduyise Khuboni’s effort went agonisingly wide of goal.
