PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu will go into the annals of Zambia’s history as one of the best Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) patron because of his love for football and ability to go out of his way to assist the national team and fans in various ways, the Zambia Sports Fans Association (ZASPOFA) has said.
ZASPOFA patron Peter Makembo told the Daily Nation yesterday that it was now time for national team players to reciprocate President Lungu’s consideration and determination to improve soccer in the country by qualifying to the World Cup in 2018.
He said while some people had tried to divide Zambians by politicising sports events, President Lungu had demonstrated that sports events had no political inclinations but should be treated as unifying factors.
“Among all the presidents the country has had, President Lungu stands out. He has demonstrated that in the midst of political differences, Zambians are one as demonstrated by his desire to open entry to all Zambians during crucial matches for the Chipolopolo without looking at who belongs to which party.
“While big teams like Nigeria have had issues with unpaid player bonuses, that is not the case with Zambia because FAZ and government have made sure that players are well-looked after and this is the time for players to reciprocate this good gesture by starting to win crucial matches ahead,” Makembo said.
He has also appealed to the Chipolopolo Boys to believe in themselves when they take on Cameroon next month saying there was nothing to fear because Cameroon was a beatable side.
