THERE is need for residents to comply with the law by paying ground rates and adhere to good tenets of waste management, says Patriotic Front (PF) Justin Kabwe councillor Teddy Mwaba. In an interview over the weekend, Mr Mwaba implored residents in his area to be good citizens by paying their ground rates to the Lusaka City Council (LCC), explaining that the same money would be used by the local authority to carry out various developmental activities. He bemoaned the low compliance of paying rates by most residents which he attributed to ignorance and in some instances non-adherence to the law. Mr Mwaba said that he would soon embark on a sensitization campaign in collaboration with the church, members of the community and schools on the importance to be up-to -date with rates payment. “I would like to encourage residents of my ward on the importance of paying their ground rates to the local authority as it is the same money that helps to carry out various developmental activities. ‘‘My office is closely working with the church, schools and women and youth clubs to sensitize residents on the need to pay ground rates as well as remain up to date with the payments,” he said. He asked residents to make their payments at designated places and demand a receipt as proof of payment. Mr Mwaba also called on residents to practise good disposal of waste unlike in the recent past were drainages had been filled with plastics but reiterated the need for everyone to take it upon themselves to ensure that the community was tidy and remained disease free. He thanked area Member of Parliament Jean Kapata for her unwavering commitment to ensure that the community would have the best amnesties and also her availability whenever called upon.
