THE Zambia Basketball Federation (ZBF) have tasked Midlands Basketball Association chairperson Sydney Kalema to head the fundraising committee created to raise resources for the national governing body. Kalema will work together with Southern Province basketball association chairman Robert Mc Carron as member to ensure ZBF has financial muscle to fund teams competing in international events. ZBF general secretary Mwembe Kaona announced the appointment of Kalema yesterday to Daily Nation. Kaona said ZBF had a tight local and international schedule next year hence we need to give fundraising and marketing serious attention. “Kalema who is a businessman and chairperson of Matero Magic Basketball Club will head the committee which has Southern Province Basketball Association chairman Robert Mc Carron as member and they have been granted the authority to co – opt others, “Among the programmes we need resources for are the national teams engagements which will be the qualifying series of the Afrobasket championships and the World Indigenous Basketball Challenge in Canada,” he said. Meanwhile, Kalema in an interview said he was humbled by his appointment and would work hard to improve ZBF financial standing. He said basketball had the potential to bring Zambia the medals but failed to achieve the targets due to financial constraints. “It is a tough task but I am confident that with the members of the committee, the intended purpose will be met. Our players lack the exposure because they rarely compete internationally. But I am confident that Zambia will soon begin winning medals in international tournaments,” National Sports Council of Zambia (NSCZ) announced in August that each association must be able to raise 60 percent of the budget before asking for funding from the mother body.
