THE Electoral Commission of Zambia has delivered all the materials for the Mushindamo and Kalumbila local government by-elections slated for Thursday this week. In Kalumbila, the materials arrived around 16.00 hours amid tight security and were received by district electoral officer Frank Kalenga in presence of all electoral stakeholders including political parties and candidates participating in the exercise. And stakeholders have so far expressed satisfaction at the manner the electoral process was moving. Meanwhile, Mr Kalenga who is the council secretary appealed to all political parties participating in the by-election to continue with peaceful campaigns and observe the electoral code of conduct. He said the district conflict management committee had not recorded any electoral malpractice, hence the need for all stakeholders to continue in the same manner. “So far so good, the area has been very peaceful. And the same peace should continue during and after the poll day,” said Mr Kalenga. He also urged the voters in the area to turn up in large numbers and participate in Thursday’s polls. And in Mushindamo, returning officer Adaraida Daka confirmed with the Daily Nation in an interview that electoral materials had arrived. ‘’I can confirm that we have received all electoral materials for the by-election and all the security materials are under lock and key,” she said. She also urged all the political parties and candidates to observe the electoral code ahead of the polls. Two candidates are contesting the Mushindamo council chairmanship – Patriotic Front’s Peter Kampamba and United Party for National Development’s Lackson Mulumbi. In Kalumbila, three candidates are in the race for the same position which include Slavin Bulaya of PF and Olix Kakwata and Robert Ngombelo of UPND. The People’s Alliance for Change is also participating.
