NAWAKWI, BANDA CLASH

 …as FDD suspends its vice

President

FORUM for Democracy and Development (FDD) vice-president Chifumu Banda says the decision to suspend him from the party is  a clear desperation by Ms Edith Nawakwi to go for a third term of office without being challenged.

Yesterday, FDD Standing Committee chairman Potiphar Chungu announced the suspension of Mr Banda following a formal complaint by Ms Nawakwi of his alleged gross misconduct and acts of subversion.

Mr Chungu said Mr Banda has been given 60 days in which to exculpate himself.

Meanwhile, FDD National Policy Committee (NPC) yesterday resolved to amend the party constitution in order to allow Ms Nawakwi to contest her third term of office among other clauses to be amended.

The NPC also appointed and ratified new National Policy Committee members at a meeting held yesterday.

Last week, suspended National Deputy Secretary Mr Kaluba Musenda Simuyembe and Chairman for the disabled Mr Bwalya Ng’andu filed in an injunction in the High Court restraining the FDD from holding its NPC meeting.

Mr Chungu said the meeting went ahead yesterday because FDD had not been served with any injunction restraining the party from holding its National Policy Committee meeting.

In an interview with the Sunday Nation immediately after his suspension, Mr Banda said the Committee was wrong to have suspended him without giving him a charge. “It is a clear evidence of desperation by Edith Nawakwi,” Mr Banda complained.

Mr Banda wondered why he had not been invited for the National Policy Committee which decided to amend the constitution when the party was fully aware that he was within Lusaka at his farm. “Yesterday, I called the National Chairman around 16:00hours after hearing rumours that there would be a National Policy Committee (NPC) meeting but he did not invite me, as a vice-president, for the meeting. “This morning, I was at Protea Hotel Arcades from 09:00 to 11:00 hours but no one told me that the National Policy Committee would in the afternoon hold a meeting at the same place. So this is news to me because no one has communicated to me,” he said. Mr Banda said both the National Secretary and the National Chairman did not tell him the venue of the meeting. Mr Banda has advised Ms Nawakwi to calm down and follow the procedure when amending the party constitution because it was being done wrongly.
