NKANA Football Club yesterday played to a 1-all draw against a determined Red Arrows in a FAZ/MTN week 33 league match played at the Nkana stadium to slow down their dreams of playing continental soccer next season. Both teams started on a high note with box-to-box movements as they looked for a quick goal but Nkana were the first to threaten Ken Mumba in goal as Walter Bwalya almost broke the deadlock with three minutes played after a Diego Apanane pass which he headed wide. A captivating display from the hosts dictated by the trio of Walter, Ronald Kampamba and Simon Bwalya earlier on stretched Arrows who were briefly forced to retreat as the trio ran riot in their midfield. Walter would have opened the score line 10 minutes into play after a neat lay-off from Kampamba but his final touch missed the target by a whisker as the ball flew off the pole. Three minutes later, Walter atoned for his previous miss when he outjumped Arrows defenders to nod home an opener from close range. In quick succession, Arrows Francis Simwanza almost found an equaliser when he rounded off the Nkana defenders but his final shot was blocked and cleared before the ball fell graciously at the feet of Bwalya in the midfield. Arrows then launched an attack into the area and the ball was intercepted by Festus Mbewe whose flip was well read by veteran defender Joseph Musonda who initially intercepted the it but Lubinda Mundia was at hand to collect the ball before unleashing a thunderbolt which went rocket high. Arrows then equalised through Simwanza who benefited from Simbayambaya’s cross after rounding off Musonda and buccaneered goal-wards before beating Kelvin Mubanga and slotting the ball on the far right corner to go level. The second half saw a number of chances created by both teams not utilised with Walter having an avalanche of chances which he failed to utilise forcing the game to end in a stalemate. And Green Eagles salvaged a draw against log leaders Zanaco with the same score-line at the Sunset stadium. The identical results left Zanaco and Nkana separated only by two points with the bankers moving to 69 points while Nkana has 67. In other games played yesterday, Power Dynamos played to a barren draw against Lumwana Radiants while Kabwe Warriors ran riot against Lusaka Tigers whom they beat 4-0. Lusaka Dynamos drew 3-3 against Nkwazi. Meanwhile, Zesco United today takes on Mufulira Wanderers at Shinde Stadium hoping to collect maximum points as the scramble for the league and continental slot continues.
